That was an introduction to the Stockholm university and to the library.
I will now say some words about the background of the project.
It all began with a task from the University ICT Committee. It was given to a working group which I was joining some months after I had started working at the library.
As soon as we were aware of the concept Learning centre we found it very useful for describing the scenario and the vision of how the university should use ICT in the future.
We could also notice that it was an international – and national – trend, which did not make it less interesting! From the library point of view it is more than a trend, I think it is the inevitable development for most university libraries if you want to keep up with the customer needs and requests.
We published our report with a vision and a scenario where the idea of creating a Centre for Information and Learning was first presented, last spring.
During last autumn the report was passing all the necessary administrative authorities. Finally, in the end of the year 2000, we were given green light to start the project.
We also emphasized in the repor the importance to strengthen the university´s competiveness where ICT possibilities is an important factor for a student´s choice together with a range of customer based services, easy to use and to find.
The name Lärandets galleria is a translation of the English term Learning centre. And maybe the word “gallery” is useful even in English because it symbolizes a range of different opportunities and services all put together in a coordinated way.
I do not think this audience need a definition of the concept Learning Centre since it is the theme for the whole conference so I refrain from doing so.
